I have tried to write Paradise

Do not move
let the wind speak
that is paradise

Let the Gods forgive what I
have made
Let those I love try to forgive
what I have made

Steady as she goes

Y'know, I have a tendency to write Brecht off as a Commie/collaborator fuck. But here and there, he really makes sense.

Wong Kar Wai and Christopher Doyle Interview

So hard not to go out and copy every move they made. Even the tv cameraman couldn't resist.

Doctors limit medicine for themselves

It's not something that we like to talk about, but doctors die, too. What's unusual about them is not how much treatment they get compared with most Americans, but how little. They know exactly what is going to happen, they know the choices, and they generally have access to any sort of medical care that they could want. But they tend to go serenely and gently.

Doctors don't want to die any more than anyone else does. But they usually have talked about the limits of modern medicine with their families. They want to make sure that, when the time comes, no heroic measures are taken.

Serendipity works sometimes. We came across a line where there should not have been one. It turns out, it was for a book signing by this photographer whom I'd never heard of until then. After spending time looking at his work, he just blows me away. Some of the images are very funny, too, not just the gothic kind of thing I tend to go for -- very sly and devastating.

His web site is here.

Reprise opening

I saw this movie last week and really enjoyed it. The opening sequence will give you a good feel for the whole film; it's funny, then gloomy, then very smart.
